JK – Grade 1 (Ages 4–7)
Learning Objectives
- Notice when they say something mean to themselves
- Practice giving themselves a big Thumbs Up
- Say one kind thing to themselves
1. Hook / Opening (3–4 min)
Teacher Script: “Hello, super friends! Who has ever felt like they weren’t good enough, or said something mean to themselves in their head?” (Normalize with show of hands.) “Kindness is a superpower we all have. Today we start with the most important person — you! Confidence grows when we practice being kind to ourselves. We call it Thumbs Up for Me!”
2. Teach the Cycle (3–4 min)
Teacher Script: “Notice the mean thought → Choose to be kind to yourself instead → Give yourself a big Thumbs Up and say something kind like ‘I am kind and brave!’ Let’s practice the Thumbs Up together. Stand up tall… big Thumbs Up high in the air… and smile!”
3. Main Activity (7–9 min)
Teacher models a negative thought then shows the full Cycle. Students practice with movement. Then draw themselves giving a big Thumbs Up (or use the printable worksheet).
4. Challenge & Closing (3 min)
Teacher Script: “This week, if you notice a mean thought about yourself, do Thumbs Up for Me. Let’s all stand and give ourselves a big group Thumbs Up! You are kind. You are brave. You have a superpower inside you!”
Grades 2 – 4 (Ages 7–10)
Learning Objectives
- Identify unkind self-talk
- Practice the full Kindness Cycle directed inward
- Write or draw one kind word to themselves
1. Hook / Opening (3 min)
Teacher Script: “Who here has ever felt like they weren’t good enough, or said something mean to themselves in their head?” (Normalize.) “Today we learn that confidence is a superpower that starts with kindness to ourselves. We call it Thumbs Up for Me.”
2. Teach the Cycle (3–4 min)
Teacher Script: “1. Notice – Catch the unkind thought. 2. Choose – Decide to respond with kindness instead. 3. Act – Give yourself a real Thumbs Up and say one kind thing to yourself. Let’s practice the Thumbs Up gesture together right now.”
3. Main Activity (8–10 min)
Practice scenarios with a partner (hard math problem, feeling left out, making a mistake). End with a physical Thumbs Up and kind sentence. Students complete the printable worksheet or write one kind word to themselves.
4. Challenge & Closing (3 min)
Teacher Script: “This week’s challenge: Catch at least one unkind thought about yourself, do the Kindness Cycle, and give yourself a real Thumbs Up. Group Thumbs Up for self-kindness!”
Grades 5 – 8 (Ages 10–14)
Learning Objectives
- Identify recent or common unkind self-thoughts
- Rewrite them as kind versions
- Practice the full Cycle and notice how it feels
1. Hook / Opening (3 min)
Teacher Script: “Most of us have a critical voice in our heads. Today we practice turning that voice into a kinder one using our Confidence Superpower — Thumbs Up for Me. Confidence is not the absence of self-doubt. It is the practice of responding to self-doubt with kindness.”
2. Teach the Cycle (3 min)
Teacher Script: “Notice the unkind thought. Choose to respond with kindness instead of agreeing with the mean voice. Act — give yourself a real Thumbs Up and offer kind words or a kind action toward yourself. This is a skill. It gets stronger every time you use it.”
3. Main Activity (10–12 min)
Silent reflection → rewrite an unkind thought → pair practice of the full Cycle. Students complete the printable worksheet with their personal kind response.
4. Challenge & Closing (3 min)
Teacher Script: “This week, catch at least one unkind thought, do the full Cycle, and give yourself a real Thumbs Up. We close with a group Thumbs Up — for growing confidence through self-kindness.”
High School (Grades 9–12)
Learning Objectives
- Identify recurring self-criticism
- Create a personal Confidence Thumbs-Up script
- Plan how to use it under real pressure
1. Hook / Opening (3 min)
Teacher Script: “Confidence is not the absence of self-doubt or comparison. It is the practice of responding to those moments with intentional self-kindness. Today we build a practical tool you can actually use under pressure — during tests, social situations, sports, or when social media comparison hits.”
2. Teach / Frame (3–4 min)
Teacher Script: “Notice the critical thought. Choose a kind response instead of automatically believing the criticism. Act — use a literal or internal Thumbs Up plus supportive words or a small kind action toward yourself. This is not toxic positivity. It is training your brain to have your own back.”
3. Main Activity (10–12 min)
Students identify a recurring self-criticism, apply the Cycle, and write a personal “Confidence Thumbs-Up script” on the printable worksheet that they can use in high-pressure moments.
4. Challenge & Closing (3 min)
Teacher Script: “This week, practice your script at least once when the critical voice shows up. Confidence is a superpower that grows with use. We close with a Thumbs Up — for ourselves.”
