Why This Activity Matters

Constant negative news can leave us feeling heavy. This circle turns the script around. Participants become collectors and creators of positive news by sharing real kindness stories from their own lives and noticing the lasting impact those moments created. It honors life experience, builds connection, and reminds everyone that kindness has always been — and still is — a powerful force.

How to Host the Circle

Time: 60–90 minutes  |  Group size: 6–20 people (or larger with small groups)

1. Opening (10 min)

Acknowledge that many of us are tired of negative news.
Invitation: “Today we become the Kindness Newsroom. We will collect and celebrate real stories of kindness — the ones that changed us.”

2. Story Gathering (30–40 min)

Use the printable prompt cards below.
First share in pairs (safer and easier), then invite a few people to share with the whole group.
Listeners practice the kindness of full attention — no interrupting, no fixing, just receiving the story.

3. Create the Positive News (20 min)

Turn the stories into short “headlines” or “news briefs.”
Examples: “Grandmother’s Listening Ear Turns Lonely Neighbor into Lifelong Friend” or “Simple Thank-You Note Restores Hope After a Hard Week.”
Write them on large paper, a shared document, or individual Kindness News cards.
Optional: Record short audio/video clips (with permission) for family or community sharing.

4. Impact Reflection & Closing (10–15 min)

“How has kindness changed the story of your life?”
Each person names one positive “headline” they want to live this week.
Group thumbs-up and invitation to keep collecting kindness stories (personal Positive News Journal or share with #KindnessForSeniors).

Variations & Next Steps

  • Collect the headlines into a simple printed or emailed “Kindness Gazette.”
  • Invite younger family members to listen or add their own stories.
  • Make it a regular monthly “Positive News Hour.”
  • Pair with the Self-Kindness Guide so people also notice kindness toward themselves.
