Pause Pax
Pax Stillchoice™ · Skill: Kindness Pause
“Pause. Thumbs up instead.”
Kindness role: three seconds before the unkind choice.
Stop. Relax. Consider your choices. Then Thumbs Up Instead.
This skill is not about winning the moment. It is about turning heat into a smile instead of hurt.
Pause Pax has mastered the superpower of the Kindness Pause. You can learn it, practice it in 3 lessons, and become Kindness Skill-Certified — ready to apply it.
After you print the certificate, you can join Team HeroKindness. Say the Team Promise. Then wear the badge.
The pause is the skill. Thumbs Up Instead is the kind action that follows. Together they work on a sidewalk, on a bike, in a car, at home, at school, and online.
What Kindness Pause is
Kindness Pause is three seconds of space before the unkind choice.
It is not freezing. It is not pretending you are fine. It is stopping long enough to relax, look at your choices, and pick a kindness action instead of a hurt action.
Pax’s line: “Pause. Thumbs up instead.” Then you choose the kind next step.
The essence of the skill:
- Stop for 3 seconds.
- Relax. Hands down or palm up. Take a few easy breaths.
- Consider your choices. What would create a smile instead of hurt?
- Act with kindness. A thumbs-up, a let-in, a kind word, or walking away.
Practice makes the skill stronger
Kindness Pause is a skill. You get better by using it when the rush starts.
- Notice the heat. Tight chest. Fast thumb. Sharp words forming.
- Try one small move. Stop. Count three. Breathe once.
- Feel the difference. You still have a choice.
- Do it again. Bike path. Car. Doorway. Group chat.
The skill: Kindness Pause
Learn it: Three seconds before the unkind choice. Then thumbs up instead.
How to use it:
- Feel the rush — a mean word, a shove, a horn, a “send,” a “come on.”
- Stop. Palm up or hands down. Count three. Breathe.
- Ask: “What is the kind choice right now?”
- Say, “Pause. Thumbs up instead.” Then take the kind next step.
Impact on you: You stay in charge of the next move. The heat does not get to finish the sentence for you.
Impact on others: The moment can still turn kind. A smile can replace hurt.
Collect it: Complete the 3 lessons. Pause once in real life. Write what you almost did, and what you did instead.
Thumbs Up Instead is the kind next step
Thumbs Up Instead is a key part of the campaign. The pause creates the space. The thumbs-up is the visible kindness action.
Instead of a mean look, a harsh word, a shove, a blast of the horn, or a regret-send — stop. Then extend a thumbs-up, let someone in, wait your turn, or choose a kind reply.
That small signal can change the energy of a sidewalk, a road, a kitchen, or a group chat.
The pause is the Choose in the Kindness Cycle: Notice → Choose → Act → thumbs-up → K-Spark™. The thumbs-up is the Act.
Where the pause shows up
On a sidewalk or bike: someone cuts across your path · a rider does not signal · you want to yell “watch it.” Pause. Give space. Thumbs-up and keep going. The path stays safer, and no one leaves hurt.
On the road, for parents and drivers: someone merges late · a light feels too long · another driver is rude. Instead of the unkind finger or the long horn, pause three seconds. Let them in. Give a thumbs-up. The road gets a smile instead of heat.
In school: a mean joke forming · line-push · “That’s so dumb” · rushing a classmate who needs a second. Pause. Let them finish. Thumbs-up instead of the roast.
At home: snapping at a sibling · rush at the door · grabbing the toy first · last-word fight. Pause. Hands down. Kind next sentence.
With friends / team: volume instead of words · leaving someone behind “because we’re late” · a dare that feels off. Pause. Stay with the person. Thumbs-up for the better choice.
Online: thumb on send · pile-on · screenshot-ready joke. Pocket pause. Don’t send. Thumbs-up, kind reply, or walk away.
With yourself: “I’m so dumb.” Pause. Talk to yourself the way Pause Pax would. Kind next thought.
Pause Game
One person names a rush: “Someone cuts you off on the sidewalk.” The group freezes, palm up, and counts three out loud. Then they say the kind next step: “Give space. Thumbs-up. Keep going.”
Keep scenes ordinary. No fight scenes. No unsafe dares. Switch after each rush.
Learn Kindness Pause in 3 lessons
Open one lesson. Print it. Run it at school or home. After Lesson 3, print the certificate.
Lesson 1 · Basics of the 3-second pause · 10–15 minutes
Goal: Feel the rush, then stop long enough to choose.
School: Practice the pose: palm up, count three, thumbs up. Name one rush from today (line, joke, send). Pair-share: “I almost ____.”
Home: Model one pause at the door or at the table. Count three out loud once.
Collect it: I felt the rush when ____. I stopped by ____. After three seconds I felt ____.
Lesson 2 · Thumbs Up Instead · 10–15 minutes
Goal: Use the pause to pick a kindness action.
Line: “Pause. Thumbs up instead.”
School: Pick one scene: sidewalk/bike, classroom roast, or group chat. After the count of three, name the thumbs-up move. Example: wait, let them in, kind word, no-send.
Home / car: Parents can model it on the road: pause, let someone in, thumbs-up. Kids can model it on a path or with a sibling.
Collect it: I almost ____. I did ____ instead. The better outcome was ____.
Lesson 3 · Pause in the heat of the moment · 10–15 minutes
Goal: Use breath when the feeling is bigger.
Heat can finish the sentence for you. A pause counters that. Stop. Take a few deep breaths. Then give a kind response — or get an adult if the moment is unsafe.
School / home: Notice a real heat moment. Do not act it out as a fight. Name the body clue (chest, hands, jaw, thumb). Count three. Breathe. Choose the kind next step or name the adult you would tell.
Collect it: The heat was ____. I breathed. I chose ____. If it was bigger than a pause, I would tell ____.
Safety note
Kindness Pause stops your next move. It is not a fight skill. It is not enough if someone may get hurt.
If hands, volume, or a dare turn unsafe, get a trusted adult. Pause first. Then get help.
If someone is in crisis or immediate danger in Canada, call 911. In the USA, call or text 988. In other countries, use your local emergency number.
Print for class or home
Each button prints one letter page.
