Probus Clubs & Kindness

Kindness In Our Homes and Community
A simple Probus activity and member-led talk.
Be kinder to yourself as you age. Be kinder to your partner, friends, and family. Spread kindness where you live.

No fundraising request. No club obligation.
Fellowship, friendship, and a ready-made meeting activity.

Any Probus club can use this page as-is. Print the kit, personalize the sample talk, and run the activity. No signup and no permission needed.

Why This Fits a Probus Club

Probus is fellowship, friendship, and fun — not a service club and not a fundraising body. Kindness In Our Homes and Community is an interest and social activity a current member can lead.

Interest

A 10- or 30-minute member talk drawn from the Kindness for Seniors resources. Wisdom already in the room.

Social

A Kindness Get-Together, News Circle, or Kindness Rocks table before coffee. Easy to add to an existing calendar.

Home & family

A gift or afternoon with grandchildren: Home Kindness Kit or a small Kindness Rocks project. Personal, not a club levy.

“Kindness has no age limit. Seniors belong at the centre of the movement.”

Four Ways Your Club Can Take Part

Member-Led Speaking Engagement

The strongest Probus talk is given by one of your own members. We provide the template. They personalize it. The club hears a neighbour, not a sales pitch.

Activity name: Kindness In Our Homes and Community
Introduce: thumbsupforkindness.com/kindness-for-seniors
Optional close: Kindness for Seniors Pledge
Length: 10-minute opener or 25–35 minute member talk
Materials: this page, printed reflection cards, optional badges

What the talk asks each member to consider

Myself, as I age

Self-kindness first. Rest, patience, a gentler inner voice. Senior moments met with humour, not harshness.

Partner, friends, family

Listen without rushing. Thank the small things. Ask “How can I support you today?” Include grandchildren with a simple project.

Our community

A call, a rock left on a trail, a seat saved, a thank-you in town. Kindness that leaves the house.

2. Talk outline

Open (2 minutes)
Good morning. My name is [Name], and I am a member of [Club].
This is not a fundraiser. It is an activity called Kindness In Our Homes and Community.
A grandparents’ project, Thumbs Up For Kindness, built simple tools for people our age. Start here:
thumbsupforkindness.com/kindness-for-seniors
Why this belongs in Probus (3 minutes)
We already practice kindness here — a saved seat, a call to someone who missed a meeting, waiting while a friend finds a word.
This talk makes that visible in three directions: ourselves as we age; the people closest to us; the community we live in.
My reason for standing up today: [one sentence]
Be kinder to yourself as you age (5–6 minutes)
Self-kindness is not selfish. It is the foundation.
Four practices from the Self-Kindness Guide:
1. Kindness Mirror — speak to yourself as you would to a dear friend or grandchild.
2. Self-Compassion Pause — “This is hard right now. May I be kind to myself.”
3. Daily Superpower Check-in — “Where did I use kindness today?”
4. Simple Comforts — tea, a walk, music, rest without guilt.
Useful lines: “My brain is buffering.” “It’s okay — it’ll show up.”
“I’m not losing my mind… I’m just giving it a little vacation now and then.”
My story: [Story 1]
Partner, friends, and family (6–8 minutes)
Listen without rushing. Say thank you for the unnoticed things.
Ask “Would you like a hand?” and “How can I support you today?”
A Kindness Date is 30–60 minutes of full attention with a partner or friend — coffee or a walk, no agenda.
With grandchildren: a kindness story from your life, a walk, Kindness Rocks, or a Home Kindness Kit as a gift.
My story: [Story 2]
Community (5 minutes)
Start a meeting with one thank-you. Share a real kindness story. Give someone 10 minutes. Leave a painted rock in town.
The club does not need to adopt a campaign. One household is enough. A few of us trying the same thing makes kindness visible.
My story: [Story 3]
Reflection (5 minutes) — do not skip this
Hand out the card. One minute of quiet. Two or three shares only if people want to speak.
Today I will be kinder to myself by… to my people by… in our community by…
Optional pledge and close (3 minutes)
Invite anyone who wishes to read the short Seniors Kindness Pledge. Others may simply listen.
Personalized versions (couple, short, self-kindness, or write your own) are at:
thumbsupforkindness.com/kindness-for-seniors-pledge
Leave the resource list. Invite one follow-up story at the next meeting. Thank you. Thumbs up.

3. Short Seniors Kindness Pledge

I choose to begin a new commitment:
I will be kind to myself and to the people who matter most to me.

I will notice when I need rest or gentleness.
I will speak to myself with patience.
I will share kindness in ways that feel right for me — whether quiet or shared.

Good morning. My name is Margaret Ellis, and I am a member of the Probus Club of the Gateway.

This is not a lecture and it is not a fundraiser. It is a conversation I wanted to bring into our club because it fits how Probus already works: fellowship, friendship, and a little purpose.

The activity is called Kindness In Our Homes and Community.

Thumbs Up For Kindness began when two grandparents wanted to teach their grandsons that kindness is a skill you can practice. They put the tools for people our age on one page:

thumbsupforkindness.com/kindness-for-seniors

Their idea is plain. Kindness is a lifelong superpower. It has no age limit. And it starts at home — with how we treat ourselves as we get older.

Why I said yes to this: After I retired, I noticed I was harder on myself than I had ever been on anyone else. I also wanted a simple way to spend time with my granddaughter that was not just another toy. This gave me both.

Be kinder to yourself as you age. Self-kindness is not selfish. It is the foundation for being kind to anyone else. Their guide offers four small practices: a Kindness Mirror, a Self-Compassion Pause, a one-sentence check-in at night, and one simple comfort a day. When I cannot find the word I want, I try their line: “My brain is buffering.” When the keys vanish: “It’s okay — it’ll show up.” And this one made our table laugh at breakfast: “I’m not losing my mind… I’m just giving it a little vacation now and then.”

My story: Last winter I snapped at myself in the drugstore because I could not remember why I had walked down the aisle. I stood there and used the pause: “This is hard right now. May I be kind to myself.” It sounds small. It changed the rest of the afternoon.

Partner, friends, and family. Kindness at home is usually quiet and repeated. Listen without rushing. Thank the little things. Ask “Would you like a hand?” instead of taking over. Ask “How can I support you today?” Their Kindness Date is simply 30–60 minutes of full attention — coffee or a walk, no phones. With grandchildren, tell one story about a kind act from your own life, take a kindness walk, paint Kindness Rocks, or give the Home Kindness Kit instead of more stuff.

My story: My husband and I started “Thumbs-up Thursday.” Ten minutes after supper. One thank-you each. No problem-solving. It sounds almost too simple. It has softened the week.

If you have a partner, their Kindness for Seniors Pledge was written for this stage of life. If you are on your own, the self-kindness version is enough. You can personalize it later at thumbsupforkindness.com/kindness-for-seniors-pledge.

Community. Kindness leaves the house when we start a meeting with one thank-you, share a real kindness story instead of only the grim news, give someone 10 focused minutes, or leave a painted rock on a trail or downtown. We do not need the club to adopt a campaign. If a few of us try one thing this month, kindness becomes visible where we live.

My story: My granddaughter and I painted six rocks last Saturday. We left two near the water, two on a trail, and she kept two to give at school. She called it her “kindness business.” I called it a very good afternoon.

I am going to hand out a card. You do not have to show anyone. Fill three lines if you wish: kinder to myself… kinder to my people… kinder in our community.

Those who want to can read the short pledge with me. Those who would rather listen, please just listen. Then I will sit down, and if you try one thing this month, tell me at the next meeting. That is how this spreads — member to member.

Thank you. Thumbs up.

How to swap this sample for your club
Change the name, club, and three stories. Keep the three movements: self → home → community. Keep the two URLs. Keep the reflection. Drop any line that is not true for the speaker.
